February 2015

It may be chilly outside, but things are sizzling in the encaustic studio. I am working on several new pieces simultaneously, creating layers, texture and luminous effects that can only happen with the wax.

New Art Center to Open in Village of West Greenville

Greenville Center for Creative Arts has come to an agreement with the developers of Brandon Mill to occupy an historic building in the Brandon Mill complex at 25 Draper Street in the Village of West Greenville, according to GCCA Board President, Bryant Brown.  The building, which dates to 1921, has over 26,000 square feet of space that can be adapted for use as classroom, exhibit and studio space.

Greenville Center for Creative Arts is a non-profit organization established in 2014 to provide a central place that will serve the needs of the Upstate of South Carolina in the visual arts.  It's stated mission is to collaborate with the community to provide classes, exhibit space, and a place to cultivate art appreciation and enjoyment for people of all ages, ethnic diversities and economic circumstances.

Brown noted "Greenville is nationally and internationally known as a city that loves the arts.  The city continues to draw new citizens and businesses based on the quality of life, of which art plays a big part.  Greenville Center for Creative Arts hopes to fill a void in the community by providing a central location for art education and the creative process of making art."

Although some renovation is necessary, the Center is expected to be open for classes and exhibits in the very near future.  It will later add rental of studio spaces for local artists.

Encaustic Classes

Several local artists, both beginners and professionals, are taking my encaustic  basics workshop at my studio in the Village of West Greenville.  They are coming up with fresh and beautiful creations.  I am delighted by their openness to ideas on how to "push" this beautiful medium.

Experience encaustic, the ancient art of painting with pigments dissolved in hot wax.  Learn the process used for this luminous medium in a two-day workshop.  Includes basic painting and fusing, incising lines and marks, creating texture, and adding collage elements.  Artists of every skill level will create an encaustic painting.
