The Language of an Abstract Landscape

Regarding the abstract landscape, I recommend making the effort to view a scene through the eyes of an artist.  Most of us have an emotional feeling when looking at or remembering a special place.  The artist tries to capture what moves them about that scene, focusing on and sometimes exaggerating that mood by reducing details of the landscape down to shapes, color, and lines.  When done effectively, the painting can become a statement of drama, or calm, or monumental wonder.

A big difference between a representational painting and an abstract one is that abstract work emphasizes the aesthetic—the visual language–over the recognizable subject.  That allows the viewer to be carried away by that image and relate it to their own emotional experiences.
